NIHR National PCRN Team Workshop: Facilitating the use of routine primary care data for research
NIHR National PCRN Team Workshop: Facilitating the use of routine primary care data for research - Manchester - Monday 14th November 2011
Facilitator:
Simon de Lusignan – Professor of Primary Care and Clinical Informatics – University of Surrey
Routinely collected primary care data is among the best in the world. It is a major asset for conducting research in the UK. Simon has been involved in research using routinely collected data for the last 15 years, and more recently studies using linked GP, hospital and other data sources. He has published over 150 peer review papers and worked on a wider range of grants. His Family Practice paper on using routinely collected data provides an international perspective on these issues: de Lusignan S, van Weel C. The use of routinely collected computer data for research in primary care: opportunities and challenges. Fam Pract. 2006 Apr;23(2):253-63. http://fampra.oxfordjournals.org/content/23/2/253.long
Information about Simon's current projects and downloadable tools can be found at the Clinical Informatics website: www.clininf.eu
Objective:
To understand how routinely collected primary care data might be used to support research? What you can and can’t do.
Workshop contents:
Identify gaps in knowledge and skills in using routine data for research – brainstorm current challenges.
- What are the components of record?
- What types of information are contained in a record?
- How are GP records used in research? What’s gone well?
Q&As about opportunities and challenges in using routine data in research?
